Houston Heights , TX - Theater Fire 1969
In June of 1969, an act of arson targeted the Heights Theatre, driven by protests against its screening of the Swedish sex film, "I am Curious (Yellow)." The owners at the time, Mr. and Mrs. John Scott, faced multiple instances of being followed home, and their staff received personal threats related to the controversial film. Throughout the three weeks of its exhibition, the theater experienced disruptions, including bomb threats and stink bombs. The film's contentious nature stemmed not only from its explicit content but also from its themes of social justice and equality, featuring scenes of the main character, Lena, engaging in a conversation with Martin Luther King, Jr.
In a June 7, 1969 interview with the Houston Chronicle, the owners suspected the involvement of the Ku Klux Klan in the arson, as they discovered Klan literature on their front porch after the incident. The fire resulted in the complete destruction of the theater and significant interior damage. It was unoccupied until its acquisition by Gus and Sharon Kopriva in 1987. After a year of renovation, the venue was reopened in 1988 as an art space. Edwin Cabaniss, the current owner, purchased it in 2015 and undertook further extensive renovations. The Heights Theatre officially reopened in 2016, now functioning as a venue for concerts, independent film screenings, and local community events.

Houston weatherman Doug Brown in 1974 at Thornwood Elementary School - KHOU-TV, Channel 11

A short 16mm clip of Doug Brown, long-time weatherman in Houston, Texas. I know he worked for years at, and retired from, KTRK, but when he first came to Houston in 1972 from Waco, he worked at KHOU for a few years. Near as I can determine this clip is from 1974, because he is talking back to Bob Brown in the newsroom, and Bob worked at KHOU for just 2 years before moving to Dallas in 1975. So ...

    My father was an F-102 pilot during the time of this video. He LOVED to fly. It was his first love, truly. I have much of his memorabilia from his career, including his machbuster pin because, back then, it was an uncommon feat to break the sound barrier! He flew a variety of planes during his career, from screaming fast in that 102 to going low and slow in an 01 Bird-Dog as a FAC in Viet Nam. He was just happy to take off, and equally happy to land! I made a beautiful cross-stitch of High Flight in needlepoint for him when I was a young lady. I grew up with that poem, and it truly is so beautiful. It definitely captured my father's soul, and it speaks to me every time I hear it.

But one thing that really sticks out in my mind was that the "chicks" (about 90%) all had the identical bodies and hair. They looked like Ali Mac Graw back then. Which of course I really liked!

    I love watching college football highlights in the off season. It keeps me hyped up. One note, it's interesting to see they didn't have wide-angle lenses. They had to back up to get a wide-angle. This team was very influential as they developed the wish-bone. And I believe that the evil one, Barry Switzer, tried to copy this Texas team as much as he could.

    Most schools were not air conditioned back then and it was warm but fans made it bearable. That would not work today. Also male teachers had to wear a tie and ladies hose and a dress which meant several layers of undergarments. Now they refuse to acknowledge it used to be 90 or 92 not 100+.

    Amazing how they defined floods back then. Now they’re saying 100 year and 500 year floods never really meant that. There is another video on here when they were explaining raising taxes to improve the drainage. They were selling it exactly as plain English defines it. Every time it rains hard now it floods someplace it never did before. I’m usually out in it and see it happen so I don’t believe what they say.

    • @anthonyiocca5683
      @anthonyiocca5683 Місяць тому

      Also, the established drainage system consists of grates. Debris can clog grates causing flooding where it didn’t flood when the grate was clear and managed. It’s a never ending chore along with those that complain about it…
